Activated Carbon Filter
Activated carbon filters for effective chlorine removal, taste and odour control, organic compound adsorption, and RO membrane protection — essential pre-treatment for pure water systems.
Overview
Activated Carbon Filters (ACF) use the adsorption properties of granular activated carbon (GAC) to remove chlorine, chloramines, taste, odour, colour, and dissolved organic compounds from water. Activated carbon has an enormous surface area (500–1,500 m²/g) that adsorbs a wide range of organic contaminants and oxidants. ACFs are a critical pre-treatment step before RO membranes, which are damaged by chlorine and chloramines.
Aquatic Solutions manufactures activated carbon filters in FRP and MS epoxy-coated construction, using high-quality coconut shell or coal-based GAC. Our filters are designed for effective contact time (EBCT of 5–10 minutes) to ensure complete chlorine and organic removal. We also supply carbon block filters and inline carbon cartridges for smaller applications. Carbon media replacement and AMC services are available across India.

How It Works
Water Entry
Pre-filtered water (after sand filtration) enters the activated carbon filter vessel from the top and flows downward through the GAC bed.
Adsorption
As water contacts the activated carbon granules, chlorine, chloramines, organic compounds, taste, and odour molecules are adsorbed onto the vast internal surface area of the carbon (500–1,500 m²/g). This process is nearly instantaneous for chlorine removal.
Chlorine Removal
Free chlorine reacts with activated carbon in a catalytic reaction: 2Cl₂ + C + 2H₂O → 4HCl + CO₂. Chloramines are also removed, though at a slower rate requiring longer contact time (EBCT > 10 minutes).
Organic Adsorption
Dissolved organic compounds (humic acids, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, THMs) are adsorbed onto the carbon surface. The adsorption capacity depends on the molecular weight and polarity of the organic compound.
Backwash
Periodic backwash (weekly or as needed) fluidises the carbon bed to remove accumulated suspended solids and biological growth, maintaining bed permeability and preventing channelling.
Carbon Exhaustion & Replacement
Over time (2–5 years), the carbon adsorption capacity is exhausted. Breakthrough of chlorine or organics indicates the carbon needs replacement. Spent carbon can be reactivated or replaced with fresh media.
