Overview

Ultrafiltration (UF) is a pressure-driven membrane separation process that removes particles in the 0.01–0.1 micron range — including bacteria, viruses, colloids, proteins, and suspended solids — while retaining dissolved salts and minerals. UF membranes produce consistently high-quality filtered water regardless of feed water turbidity variations, making them ideal for drinking water treatment, RO pre-treatment, and tertiary wastewater polishing.

Aquatic Solutions supplies hollow-fibre and tubular UF membrane systems from leading global manufacturers. Our UF systems are designed for low operating pressure (1–3 bar), high flux, and easy backwash and chemical cleaning. They are widely used as a pre-treatment step before RO systems to reduce SDI (Silt Density Index) and protect expensive RO membranes, and as a standalone treatment for surface water and STP effluent polishing.

Key Features

  • Hollow-fibre UF membranes — 0.01–0.05 micron pore size
  • Removes bacteria (> 6 log), viruses (> 4 log), and turbidity
  • Low operating pressure (1–3 bar) — energy efficient
  • Automated backwash and CEB (Chemically Enhanced Backwash)
  • High recovery rate — up to 95%
  • Compact skid-mounted design
  • Capacities from 500 LPH to 5,00,000 LPH
  • Compatible with PVDF, PES, and PS membrane materials

How It Works

1

Feed Water Intake

Pre-screened feed water (surface water, borewell, or STP effluent) enters the UF system. A coarse strainer removes large particles that could damage the membrane fibres.

2

Membrane Filtration

Water is forced through hollow-fibre membranes under low pressure (1–3 bar). Particles larger than 0.01–0.05 microns — including bacteria, viruses, and colloids — are retained on the membrane surface.

3

Permeate Collection

Filtered water (permeate) passes through the membrane wall and is collected for use or further treatment (e.g. RO). The permeate is consistently clear with turbidity below 0.1 NTU.

4

Backwash

Periodically, filtered water is forced back through the membranes in reverse to dislodge accumulated particles from the membrane surface, restoring flux and maintaining performance.

5

CEB (Chemically Enhanced Backwash)

A low-dose chemical (chlorine or citric acid) is added during backwash to remove biological and organic fouling that cannot be removed by hydraulic backwash alone.

6

CIP (Clean-In-Place)

Periodic CIP with acid and alkali solutions fully restores membrane permeability after extended operation, extending membrane life to 5–7 years.
